Have you ever been in a relationship where you loved each other but the relationship was still failing? The character A knows exactly what that is like. “Everyday” by David Levithan, teaches the reader about relationships and how they’re not always easy. A is the main character in this story, he is not like other people his age, everyday he wakes up in a different body. One day he meets a girl name Rhiannon and he falls in love with her. When he tells her about his life style they start to fall in love even though there are many complications, but throughout the book A and Rhiannon realize that sometimes when you are in a relationship with someone loving them is not enough.
As the story develops Rhiannon and A’s relationship became too complicated and their love is not enough to keep their relationship going. It’s surprising when Rhiannon says, “Let’s just wait until we’re off school grounds, okay? Why don’t you walk behind me for a little while. I think it’ll just make things easier,” page 258. Even though Rhiannon is going through difficult times with some of her friends it doesn’t mean she should take it out on A. I also think that because Rhiannon and A’s relationship is becoming more complicated she is starting to resent A and maybe blames him for why people are being mean to her at school. Another example of this is that during the story A just wants Rhiannon to love him no matter whose body he is in, boy or girl. A wants her to love him because of what he is on the inside. This is too much for Rhiannon, she cannot get past the fact that A could be a girl one day and a boy the next. In the past she has never had such a serious relationship so she is not used to having this many complications.
Throughout the book Rhiannon realizes that even though she loves A, she needs stability in her life. Rhiannon starts to show that her love isn’t enough, “Rhiannon I love you, I say. ‘And I love you.’ That isn’t the question, she’s saying. But it’s not the answer either,” page 281. Rhiannon realizes at this moment that her love for A wasn’t enough to keep her satisfied in their relationship. Another example of this is when Rhiannon says, “I want us to be in each others lives. But your life can’t keep derailing mine. I need to be with my friends, A. I need to go to school and go to prom and do all the things I’m supposed to do,” page 280. I think that Rhiannon is not as devoted to her and A’s relationship as A is. She does love A and knows their relationship is different and weird but she doesn’t want to be different, their love is not enough for her.
This book is important for all people to read because it teaches the reader about love and what happens when your love is not adequate. Some people think that just loving each other will make the relationship work but it doesn’t always. Relationships require work and sacrifice, “Everyday” informs the reader about the truth of relationships and how they’re not all easy.
